The number of educated youths who remain unemployed is steadily rising in Himachal Pradesh.
Many in the state were deprived of their source of livelihood due to the spread of corona and lockdowns.
Information shared in state Assembly
As per information shared in the state Assembly on Monday on the first day of the monsoon session, there are 8,46,209 unemployed youths in the state as of January 31, 2020.
However, this is the number of youths who have registered themselves with various employment exchanges in the state. The figure would go up substantially if youths, who have not registered themselves with employees exchanges are included.
Public sector offers little succour
In the past two years, 28,661 youths were provided employment in the public sector. Vacant posts are not being filled up regularly.
Out of this figure only 3109 were given permanent jobs whereas 17,390 are on contract, 415 are employed on daily wages and 7747 are engaged on a part-time basis or through outsourcing.

Unemployment percentage at 15.6 in February 2020
As per statistics of Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) by February 2020 the unemployment rate in Himachal Pradesh had touched 15.6 percent. Last year, during the total lockdown, the unemployment rate had touched a record 26.9 percent.
