State-level World Wetlands Day celebrations in Rewalsar

Mandi: To commemorate World Wetlands Day, the State Wetland Authority of Himachal Pradesh organized a state-level event on February 2 at the Government Senior Secondary School in Rewalsar.
Dr Suresh Chand Attri, the Joint Secretary of the State Wetland Authority, chaired the program online from Shimla, with Anil Kumar, the principal of the local school, in attendance as the chief guest.

Dr Attri explained that the celebration aims to raise public awareness and promote the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands across the state. He announced plans to seek international recognition for Rewalsar Wetlands through the State Wetland Authority.

Collaborating with the Forest Department, Mandi, a proposal for the conservation and development of Rewalsar Wetlands is underway. Preceding the event, a campaign was conducted in Rewalsar and surrounding areas from January 27 to February 1. Students from different schools actively participated, informing the local population about wetlands’ significance and raising awareness.

Ravi Sharma, a scientist from the Himachal Pradesh State Wetland Authority, shared insights on the importance of lakes in nature during the program. The event concluded with attendees taking the Wetland Friend pledge. Approximately 200 students from Rewalsar and nearby schools participated in various competitions, including art, organized as part of the event.
