19-year-old shooter Avani becomes first Indian woman to win a gold medal at Paralympics

Shooter Avani Lekhara has become the first-ever Indian woman to win a gold medal in the history of Paralympics. The 19-year-old equalled the world record by shooting a score of 249.6 in the R2 – Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event to clinch the gold. It is India’s first gold medal at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics.

Javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia won a silver medal at the Tokyo Paralympics with a personal best throw of 64.35 metres. The 40-year-old had bagged gold in the 2004 and 2016 Paralympics. India’s Sundar Singh Gurjar won the bronze medal in the event with his season best throw of 64.01 metres.

Indian discus thrower Vinod Kumar wins bronze at Tokyo Paralympics, sets Asian record

Indian discus thrower Vinod Kumar won a bronze medal in the men’s discus throw F-52 final event at Tokyo Paralympics. The 41-year-old set a new Asian record with a throw of 19.91 metres, finishing third in his event.

The Indian-American duo of Sania Mirza and Christina McHale lost 5-7, 3-6 against the Japanese pair of Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara in the women’s doubles final of the Tennis in the Land tournament in Cleveland on Sunday. Notably, this is the fifth WTA doubles title for the Japanese pair of the year and eighth overall.

Sumit Antil breaks world record thrice in the finals of Javelin throw F64 category, clinches gold medal

Sumit Antil won javelin gold medal with a world record throw of 68.55 and won India’s second gold medal in parlaympics 2020. Sumit, who broke the world record with a 66.95m throw in his first attempt, bettered it to 68.08 in his second and then touched 68.85 in his fifth attempt. Sandeep Chaudhary finished fourth in the event, with a best throw of 62.20m.

This gold medal is not mine, it’s for entire country: Shooter Avani

After winning a gold medal in Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event at Tokyo Paralympics, shooter Avani Lekhara said, “This medal is not mine, it’s for the entire country.” “I was not at all thinking about a medal, I was focussing on the process, taking one shot at a time,” she added. It is the 19-year-old’s maiden Olympics.

India’s bronze medal at Paralympics taken back as Vinod Kumar declared ineligible

India have lost one medal at Tokyo Paralympics after discus thrower Vinod Kumar was declared ineligible for men’s F-52 discus throw event. Vinod had set an Asian record with throw of 19.91 metres to win bronze, however, it was put on hold on Sunday following protest over his disability classification.

Elated to win Paralympic bronze after 2016 Rio disqualification: Sundar

India’s Sundar Singh Gurjar, who won a bronze medal in javelin throw at Tokyo Paralympics, said he is “elated” to win the medal after disqualification in 2016 Rio Paralympics. “I want to thank my coach Mahaveer Saini who trained me from 2009 to 2021,” he added. Sundar threw 64.01m, his season-best, to finish third at the podium.
