Shimla: The Sewage Treatment Plant Workers Union in Shimla recently convened a general meeting at the Farmers Workers Building in Chitkara Park, Kathu, Shimla, drawing attention to the concerning changes in labor laws under the Modi government.
Led by prominent leaders such as Vijendra Mehra, Ramakant Mishra, and others, the assembly brought together numerous workers to discuss the current state of labor affairs. They shed light on the significant alterations in labor legislation, with the Modi government replacing 42 hard-earned labor laws with just four labor codes. These new codes have been criticized for favoring corporate interests over the rights and well-being of workers.
During the meeting, union leaders expressed deep concern over the impact of these changes on the workforce. They emphasized that the new labor codes are inherently anti-worker and pro-capitalist, pushing many workers towards conditions akin to bonded labor. Moreover, they highlighted the alarming rise in unemployment and inflation, attributing it partly to the policies of the current government.
One particular scheme, the Agniveer scheme, came under scrutiny for its potential to exacerbate the plight of workers. By restricting opportunities for government employment, especially for the children of disadvantaged families, this scheme is perceived as further marginalizing the vulnerable sections of society.
The leaders of the union called for collective action to address these issues, urging workers to unite and demand accountability from the government. They emphasized the need to stand against policies that prioritize corporate interests over the welfare of workers and the nation as a whole.
The assembly served as a platform for workers to voice their grievances and mobilize for change.
