Shimla: Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu marked Diwali on Monday by celebrating with children at Shimla’s Tutikandi Children’s Home and Mashobra Girls’ Home, sharing the festive joy and extending heartfelt greetings.
The Chief Minister performed the traditional Lakshmi Puja alongside the children, offering prayers for the peace, prosperity, and well-being of the state’s citizens. As part of the celebrations, he distributed sweets, fireworks, and gifts to the children, wishing them a bright and prosperous future.
State to Support Education and Exposure Trips
During the celebrations, the Chief Minister announced that the state government would fund both education and exposure visits for the children.
“We have planned educational excursions for these children to Goa and other notable historical sites, and the government will bear all travel, lodging, and food expenses,” he said, emphasizing that these initiatives are aimed at broadening the children’s learning experiences.
Focus on Welfare for Orphans and Specially-Abled Children
The Chief Minister highlighted the government’s unwavering commitment to supporting orphaned and specially-abled children in Himachal Pradesh.

Notably, he mentioned that orphaned children are now officially recognized as “Children of the State.” Himachal Pradesh, under his leadership, has pioneered this legal recognition, becoming the first state in India to grant “Children of the State” status, ensuring that these children are given priority and treated as family within the community.
Financial Aid for Coaching and Digital Library Setup
To further support these children’s educational goals, the government will provide INR 75,000 for coaching to those who qualify. The Chief Minister also directed the Shimla district administration to establish a digital library at the Mashobra Girls’ Home, aiming to enrich educational resources for the residents and support their academic progress.
Cultural Performances Lighten the Festive Mood
The children showcased their talents through a vibrant cultural program, adding a joyous spirit to the celebrations. Following the program, the Chief Minister visited Nari Seva Niketan in Mashobra, where he extended his Diwali wishes to the residents and distributed additional gifts.
Officials and Dignitaries Join in Celebrations
Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap, Director of Women and Child Development Kiran Bhardana, Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Gandhi, and other prominent figures joined the Chief Minister in celebrating the occasion, spending time with the children and engaging in the festivities.
The presence of these dignitaries highlighted the importance of community, compassion, and unity during the festival, further amplifying the sense of belonging for these children on Diwali.
