Shimla MC completes measurement of ‘illegal’ construction at Sanjauli mosque, crucial hearing on this day

Sanjauli mosque

Shimla: The measurement of the alleged illegal construction at the mosque located in Sanjauli, A suburb of Himachal Pradesh capital Shimla, has been completed.

A team from the Architect Branch of the Shimla Municipal Corporation visited the mosque premises to conduct the measurement in the presence of members from the mosque committee. A detailed report is currently being prepared and will be presented during the upcoming hearing in the Municipal Corporation Commissioner’s court on October 5.

The court proceedings will address the illegal construction issue, and the measurement report will be a critical piece of evidence. The Municipal Corporation has refrained from making the report public due to the ongoing legal considerations. Earlier reports indicated that the two-storey mosque had been expanded to five storeys without proper approval of the construction plans.

During the previous hearing, the Waqf Board requested that the Municipal Corporation provide the latest report regarding the total extent of illegal construction. In response, the Municipal Commissioner directed the junior engineer to prepare and present the updated status report, leading to the recent measurements.

In a noteworthy development, the mosque committee has expressed its willingness to voluntarily demolish the illegal construction if ordered by the Municipal Corporation. This proactive approach aims to promote peace and mutual harmony within the community. The Waqf Board has indicated that it has no objections to this decision.

Despite efforts to de-escalate tensions, protests by Hindu organisations in Shimla and across the state have continued, fuelled further by the recent visit of AIMIM leader Shoaib Jamai. However, the mosque committee remains committed to its decision to address the issue constructively.
