Himachal Pradesh has been witnessing scorching temperatures these days, with the capital city of Shimla recording the highest temperature in 10 years at 31 degrees Celsius on Friday. This surpassed the previous record set in June 2014, when the maximum temperature reached 31.4 degrees Celsius.
The temperature was only a little over 1 degree less than the highest ever of 32.4 degrees Celsius recorded in Shimla on May 27, 2010, according to the Meteorological department.
The heatwave has enveloped eight districts of the state, including Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Solan, Sirmaur, Shimla and Mandi. On Friday, nine areas across Himachal Pradesh recorded temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, signalling intense heat even in mountainous regions traditionally known for their cooler climate.
All areas of the state, including Shimla, experienced scorching heat on Friday, marking the hottest day of the season so far, said weather officials. Dharamshala, Una, Kangra, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba and Manali reported the highest temperatures for June in the past two years.
The heatwave is expected to persist across Himachal Pradesh until June 17, with temperatures anticipated to rise further during this period. Pre-monsoon showers are predicted to bring some relief from June 18 onward, with a possible change in weather patterns due to the influence of a western disturbance.
The onset of monsoon in Himachal Pradesh is anticipated by the last week of June, offering hope for respite from the relentless heatwave that has made life challenging in many areas of the state. Citizens are advised to take precautions against the high temperatures and stay hydrated to mitigate the impact of the heatwave.
