DHARAMSHALA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (July 6, 2023) called up Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama to wish him on the occasion of his 88th birthday.
“Spoke to His Holiness @theDalaiLama and conveyed heartfelt greetings to him on his 88th birthday. Wishing him a long and healthy life,” the Prime Minister tweeted. The call between the two leaders lasted around 15 minutes. It is the third year in a row that PM Modi has spoken on the phone to the Dalai Lama and subsequently tweeted about it.The PM’s call comes amid the tension between India and China over the military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh.
An analyst said the phone calls to the Dalai Lama and its public announcements have diplomatic significance given that Chima calls the Tibetan spiritual leader a “splittist”. India has maintained that the two sides should be “mindful of mutual sensitivities, interests and concerns”.
