MANDI: The Sanyard area of Mandi city in Himachal Pradesh has been grappling with severe land subsidence issues since 2022, triggered by heavy rainfall. Despite efforts by the administration, including the construction of a protective wall costing Rs 20 lakh, the situation has continued to deteriorate. The protective wall collapsed during the 2023 monsoon season, alongside three houses, leaving another 20 homes under constant threat.
No safe pathway: Residents face daily challenges
The landslide has not only damaged houses but also blocked access paths to the affected homes, creating significant difficulties for residents, especially children and the elderly. Many residents, including Narmada Chauhan, Durga Das, Bhavana and BR Thakur, expressed their fears, recounting how their lives have been upended since the ground started shifting in 2022. Despite the administration’s initial measures, no substantial progress has been made in stabilising the area.

Appeal to govt for urgent action
The district administration has prepared and submitted a comprehensive preliminary project report (PPR) to the state government, highlighting the urgency of the situation. Affected residents like Ranbir Singh and Akash Sarbwal have pleaded for the state government to approve the PPR promptly, warning that without swift intervention, more homes could be lost.
Official response & future implications
Mandi ADM Madan Kumar assured that the district administration is addressing the land subsidence problem with full commitment. A detailed survey has been conducted to determine the causes of the subsidence, and the administration is providing all possible assistance to those impacted. However, with numerous homes perched precariously on the hillside, experts caution that without robust preventive measures, the region could face severe and long-term consequences.

The ongoing land subsidence in Sanyard is a grim reminder of the fragile nature of hillside construction in high-rainfall zones. If the state government does not act swiftly on the PPR and implement effective control measures, the safety and future of the residents remain in jeopardy.
