MANDI: Himachal Pradesh’s youth are experiencing a troubling rise in heart-related issues, a development experts say could jeopardise the future health landscape of the region.
Cardiologists and other specialists gathered at the two-day ‘Him Medicon 2024’ conference in Mandi, where leading heart specialists raised concerns over these alarming trends and discussed new approaches to address them.

Dr TS Mahant, a distinguished cardiologist originally from Mandi’s Pandoh and currently practising in Chandigarh, shared his observations of a worrisome trend. He reported seeing a growing number of patients between the ages of 30 and 50 years experiencing heart problems, which he attributes to lifestyle changes.

“Young people are increasingly engaging in substance use, consuming junk food and leading sedentary life,” Dr Mahant noted, adding that this generation had largely moved away from physical activity, relying on machines even for minor tasks.

In Himachal Pradesh, known for its clean air and wholesome food, the rise in heart disease among young adults underscores how profoundly lifestyle shifts impact health.

Technological advances offer hope

Prominent Chandigarh-based cardiologist Dr Harinder highlighted recent technological breakthroughs that have transformed heart disease treatment.

For elderly patients in need of heart valve replacements, major surgery is no longer required, allowing for safer, low-invasive procedures that avoid general anesthesia and provide immediate results.

“Patients can recover rapidly, often being discharged within two days,” Dr Bali said, emphasising how these advancements can improve quality of care and recovery times.
