The Shimla-Kalka heritage railway track has been restored for full train operations, allowing all trains to run from Kalka to Shimla railway station as scheduled starting Tuesday. This development is a significant relief for thousands of tourists, both domestic and international, who can now enjoy the picturesque views along this UNESCO world heritage track.

For the past three days, train services were limited to Taradevi, Solan and Barog stations due to repair work on bridge number 800 near Summerhill. The Railway Department, taking into account the monsoon season, constructed RCC pillars under the bridge to ensure its stability. After receiving clearance from technical experts on Monday afternoon, initial trials with a trolley and then an engine were conducted successfully. Following these tests, the Himalayan Queen train passed over the bridge, reaching Shimla railway station without incident.

Seven trains resume full operations
The Shimla-Kalka heritage track accommodates seven trains, all of which are currently fully booked due to the peak summer season. The bridge repairs had previously forced the railway department to operate trains on only half of the route, causing significant inconvenience to tourists. Passengers had to rely on taxis and buses for the remainder of their journey, leading to additional hassle and financial strain. With the resumption of full train services, tourists will now experience a smoother and more enjoyable travel experience.

Expert supervision ensures safety
The repair work on bridge number 800 was meticulously supervised by specialists from the Chief Bridge Engineer Department (CBE). Last year, a severe landslide during the rainy season had compromised the track’s foundation. To prevent a recurrence, the railway department has taken extensive precautions and carried out the necessary repairs under expert guidance.
