Relief for Hamirpur residents as suspected monkeypox case tests negative

SHIMLA: The sample of a suspected monkeypox patient from Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh has tested negative, ruling out any immediate threat of the virus spreading in the district.

The sample, which was sent for testing to the microbiological lab of Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla on Monday, confirmed the absence of the monkeypox virus.

he patient, who visited the dermatology department of Dr Radhakrishnan Medical College in Hamirpur on September 14, displayed rashes and blisters, akin to initial symptoms commonly associated with monkeypox. His case raised concern due to his travel history as he had returned from the US around six weeks ago.

As a precautionary measure, the patient was immediately admitted to the isolation ward of the medical college.

The patient’s sample was collected on Saturday and dispatched to IGMC-Shimla for testing. With the negative report now in, Dr Ramesh Bharti, Principal of Dr Radhakrishnan Medical College, confirmed that the patient’s blisters and skin lesions are being treated accordingly, and there is no longer any suspicion of monkeypox.
