Shimla: Himachal Pradesh on Modnday witnessed heavy snowfall in high-altitude areas and concurrent rainfall in lower regions. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert, prompting the closure of crucial routes, including the Atal Tunnel Rohtang and Jalori Pass, to ensure public safety.
Persistent Snowfall in Key Regions
The snowfall, continuing for the second consecutive day, has covered the higher reaches of Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti Valley in a picturesque white blanket.
Simultaneously, areas like Shimla are experiencing rainfall, resulting in adverse weather conditions. Lahaul-Spiti Valley, in particular, has observed its second snowfall of the year in residential areas.
Snowfall Measurements
Significant snowfall measurements include 20 cm in Tindi (Lahaul), 30 cm each in Trilokinath and Kukumseri, 60 cm in Rohtang Pass, and about 75 cm in Kunzum Pass and Baralacha Pass.
The CB Range, encompassing Ghepan Peak, Indrakila, Bada Shigri, and Chhota Shigri, has also witnessed substantial snowfall. Due to heavy snowfall in the Solang Barrier area, vehicular movement towards Atal Tunnel Rohtang from Solang Barrier has been temporarily prohibited.
Alerts and Forecast
A red alert is in effect today, indicating the potential for heavy to very heavy rain/snowfall at speeds of 40-50 km per hour in many parts of the state. Lower areas, including Shimla, have yet to experience the full impact. An orange alert is issued for February 20, followed by a yellow alert for heavy snowfall and lightning on February 21. The weather forecast predicts unfavorable conditions in high mountainous regions until February 24.
Temperature Readings
Recorded minimum temperatures include 7.2 degrees Celsius in Shimla, 9.6 in Sundernagar, 6.5 in Bhuntar, 0.5 in Kalpa, 11.2 in Dharamshala, 9.0 in Una, and various others across the state. Residents and travelers are urged to exercise caution and preparedness during this period of intense weather activity.
