Rakesh Kumar of Palampur to receive Himachal’s highest civilian honour on Independence Day

MANDI: Rakesh Kumar, who currently serves as the Chairman of India Expo Mart Limited and Chief Mentor of the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH), will be awarded the ‘Prerna Strot Samman 2024’—the highest civilian award of Himachal Pradesh. This recognition is a testament to his outstanding contributions in promoting handicrafts, trade and exports on a global scale, as well as his unwavering commitment to the cultural and economic development of Himachal Pradesh.

The award will be conferred during a state-level event in Dehra, Kangra district, marking a significant moment of pride for the state and its people. Alongside Kumar, the award will also be presented to two other eminent personalities: Padma Shri awardee Prof Mahesh Verma and Satya Prakash Sharma, the founder of Divya Manav Jyoti Seva Trust.

Kumar’s journey in the sector began in 1994 when he organised his first major event, the “Indian Handicrafts and Gift Fair”. This event, which started as a small initiative, has now grown into one of the most significant trade fairs in the industry, setting new benchmarks for Indian handicrafts on the global stage. Today, this fair serves as a crucial platform for thousands of Indian artisans and exporters, attracting buyers from across the world.

His contributions extend beyond events. Kumar has played a pivotal role in the development of various artisan hubs across India, including Jodhpur, Jaipur, Saharanpur, Narsapur, Moradabad, and the North East. His dedication to empowering women artisans, particularly in Barmer, Rajasthan, and Manna village, has garnered widespread acclaim. Through skill development and entrepreneurship programs, he has transformed the lives of thousands of female artisans, giving them a sustainable livelihood and a voice in the industry.
