Dharamshala: Amid a brewing social media controversy between residents of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, tourists visiting Himachal have said that they feel safe and welcomed in the state.
Despite historical resource disputes between the neighbouring states, recent incidents have reignited discussions online. The controversy gained momentum following a slap incident involving Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut at the Chandigarh airport and an alleged assault on an NRI couple from Punjab in Dalhousie.
These events have fuelled debates on social media, raising concerns among potential tourists. However, those currently visiting Himachal Pradesh, particularly in Dharamshala, have a different story to tell.
Amandeep Saini from Ambala expressed his delight at visiting Dharamshala. “The environment and the nature of the people here are amazing,” he said. “All the things spreading on social media are completely wrong. The people of Himachal are very helpful and welcoming.” Saini advised against engaging in negative social media discussions about the region.
Virat Kundra, a tourist from Punjab, echoed similar sentiments. “This is just a misconception spread by some people. In reality, there is nothing like this. While there might be occasional tussles between individuals from both states, it is not right to blow these things out of proportion and create controversies.”
Kundra emphasised the long-standing harmonious relationship between Punjabis and Himachalis, attributing the social media uproar to individuals seeking attention.
Tourism amid controversy
Despite the high temperatures across the country, Himachal Pradesh remains a popular destination for tourists seeking respite. The state’s natural beauty and the hospitality of its residents continue to attract visitors, underscoring the positive experiences shared by tourists like Saini and Kundra.
As the controversy simmers on social media, the real-time experiences of tourists in Himachal Pradesh highlight the disparity between online perceptions and on-ground realities. Visitors are encouraged to focus on their personal experiences and enjoy the region’s scenic landscapes and warm hospitality.
The tourism sector in Himachal Pradesh continues to thrive, with tourists affirming their safety and the state’s welcoming nature. Authorities are hopeful that such firsthand accounts will help dispel misconceptions and ensure that the state’s reputation as a prime tourist destination remains intact.
