Congress stages dharna at the Ridge
Congress party members led by Shimla urban MLA Vikramaditya Singh staged a dharna at the Ridge on Sunday to protest the closing down of the langar.
Singh said that the government was unnecessarily politicising a humanitarian endeavour and demanded that the langar should be restarted without delay.
Track record of the langar
The langar was removed by IGMC administration with the help of quick response team of the police and all materials were dumped on the road.
Social media reacted strongly to this move by the hospital administration because for the past 7 years the langar has been providing breakfast, lunch and dinner to needy people. At present, Sarbjeet Singh, who operates the langar, is admitted to a Chandigarh hospital for kidney-related treatment.
Sarbjit Singh is also known to organise blood donation camps and arranging for blankets and sheets for patients’ kin as well as helping out people in the funeral of their kin. He was also running langar in Kamala Nehru Hospital.
IGMC MS Dr Janak Raj said that the langar was an illegal activity and hence shut down. He said that the langar was being operated to grab hold of hospital property and legal action would soon be initiated in the matter.
