SHIMLA: All India Congress Committee general secretary Priyanka Gandhi visited the rain disaster-affected areas of Shimla town around 9 am on Wednesday (September 13, 2023).
She met the families of those killed in the massive landslide at Shiv Bawadi in
Summerhill, an area severely impacted by the calamity. The disaster, which struck the region with unprecedented force, resulted in the loss of 21 lives as the victims, mostly paying obeisance in a temple then, were buried under debris in Shiv Bawadi area.
Priyanka again reiterated her demand that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should declare the rain disaster in Himachal Pradesh a national calamity and provide a relief package accordingly. She said the special package should come irrespective of the fact that a Congress government has been ruling the state. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi should declare this situation a national disaster without any delay.
This is not a time for politics, but time for relief and rehabilitation measures. The central government must extend all possible assistance to Himachal Pradesh, regardless of the political landscape in the state,” she said.
Accompanying Priyanka Gandhi were key officials from the state government, including Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri and Panchayati Raj Minister Anirudh Singh.
Before Priyanka Gandhi’s visit, the police issued challans to vehicles parked in yellow line area in Summerhill. The Congress general secretary will return to New Delhi via Solan on September 15. In Solan too, Priyanka will visit the disaster-affected areas and meet the victims. Although Priyanka had to go to Solan on Tuesday itself, she could not go due to bad weather and fog.
