Priyanka Gandhi attacks Modi for ‘ignoring second home’ Himachal during rain disaster

DHARAMSHALA: Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi launched a strong attack on the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an election rally in Chamba town’s Chowgan ground on Monday (May 27, 2024) as she accused him of trying to topple a democratically elected government using money and buying MLAs.

She questioned if this was the PM’s love for Himachal Pradesh, a state he often described as his second home.

Priyanka claimed that PM Modi and BJP leaders aimed to gain power through corrupt practices, citing the Agniveer scheme as an example. She criticised Modi for being disconnected from Himachal Pradesh and Chamba, visiting only as a tourist, and failing to provide relief during the 2023 rain disaster. According to her, despite Modi calling Himachal his second home, the BJP did not offer any support during the monsoon disaster.

In contrast, Priyanka emphasised the Congress’s efforts during the disaster, stating that Congress leaders were present to share the public’s grief and provide relief. She attributed high unemployment rates and government sector vacancies to BJP’s flawed policies, which she claimed favoured Modi’s billionaire friends.

“Under the BJP’s rule, farmers don’t get fair prices for their crops, joblessness is at its highest in 70 years and essential commodity prices are soaring, yet PM Modi doesn’t mention unemployment or inflation,” she said. She argued that instead of empowering people, the BJP government had weakened society, and accused Modi of making illogical claims, such as alleging that Congress would seize people’s property.

She also criticised the Agniveer scheme for creating two categories of martyrs and alleged that the BJP government had scrapped disability pension for soldiers. Reflecting on the Congress’ tradition, she invoked the legacies of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, emphasising their dedication to serving the people.

She accused the BJP of breaking promises and becoming the richest political party in just 10 years, while the Congress, despite being in power for 55 years, did not amass such wealth. Highlighting the Congress’ achievements, she mentioned the establishment of IITs, IIMs, NIFT, Bhakra Nangal Dam and medical colleges, contrasting these with BJP’s policies.

She reassured the public that the Congress would “never sell the country’s property to billionaires or topple governments for power”. She urged the voters to remember the Congress’ dedication and service when casting their vote, reminding them of the party’s commitment to development and welfare.
