Shimla: Due to a drop in temperatures causing the Pangi Valley’s mercury to plummet, electricity production has drastically declined. The four powerhouses in the valley, with a total capacity of 1400 kilowatts, are currently only generating 250 kilowatts of electricity. This has led to a situation where residents in the valley are experiencing a mere one hour of electricity supply during the day.
The power crisis is attributed to both the freezing of water in the streams and a technical malfunction in the 900-kilowatt Sach Power House. As a result, electricity production in the region has come to a complete standstill. The areas illuminated by the Sach and Sechu power house receive electricity for just one hour daily. Pangi’s four powerhouses include Sach (900 KW), Kilad (300 KW), Sural (100 KW), and Purti Power House (100 KW). However, due to the Sach Power House malfunction, only 50% of the total electricity production capacity is currently operational.
Residents of Pangi Valley are grappling with a severe electricity crisis, and the social organization “Pangi Fast Pangiwal Fast” expressed concern over the situation. Indra Prakash Sharma, the president of the organization, emphasized the need for dredging in the streams to ensure a steady water supply for electricity production. He lamented that despite living in the digital age, the people of Pangi Valley are deprived of fundamental amenities like electricity. The organization urged prompt action to address the ongoing disparity in the region.
Official statement:
Rajiv Thakur, Executive Engineer at the Electricity Board Circle Dalhousie, attributed the decline in electricity production to the freezing of water in Pangi’s streams. Additionally, a technical issue in the Sach Power House has been identified, and efforts are underway to rectify it within the next one to two days. He assured that the Sach Power House will resume electricity production starting from Sunday.
