Churah (Chamba): The political landscape in Himachal Pradesh’s Churah constituency has become a battleground following serious molestation allegations against BJP MLA Hansraj, a former Deputy Speaker of the Assembly. The controversy has not only put the BJP on the defensive but has also exposed internal fractures within the Congress party, as several of its leaders scramble to capitalize on the situation.
The incident, involving a 20-year-old woman who accused Hansraj of making obscene advances, has stirred political activity in the region. The woman, the daughter of a local BJP booth president, lodged a complaint with the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Chamba , leading to the registration of an FIR at the district’s women police station. Despite her later video denying the allegations, the case remains under investigation, and the political fallout is growing.

Youth Congress leader Abhi Sharma has emerged as a vocal critic of his own party’s government, led by Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu. Sharma, who positions himself as a supporter of the late Virbhadra Singh’s legacy, posted a 38-minute live video on social media, in which he blamed the Sukhu government for its “weak” handling of the molestation case. He accused the government of failing to protect the interests of the people in Churah, a constituency where Congress has historically struggled to maintain a stronghold.
In his video and subsequent press conference, Sharma expressed disappointment with his party’s leadership, while tagging Public Works Department Minister Vikramaditya Singh. He also claimed that he had received threats, though he stopped short of directly engaging with the investigation or reaching out to the victim’s family.

This incident has not only revealed the Congress government’s vulnerabilities but has also provided an opportunity for many failed politicians within the party to regain relevance. Churah, where Congress has been weak, is now seeing these political aspirants seize the moment to assert themselves. Instead of focusing on ground-level efforts to address the issue, these leaders are using the case to gain visibility and push their agendas.
The molestation allegations against Hansraj include claims of inappropriate behavior, such as demanding nude photos and using derogatory language. The complainant also alleged that Hansraj and his associates threatened her and her family, even breaking her phone to destroy evidence. Despite these serious accusations, the Congress leaders are focusing more on media appearances and internal party rivalries rather than on securing justice for the victim.
The political atmosphere in Himachal Pradesh is likely to become even more charged. With the BJP planning to protest against the Sukhu government over recent decisions, including the controversial closure of schools, the upcoming Assembly session promises to be a heated affair. Meanwhile, few Congress leaders continue to exploit the incident for political gain, further weakening the party’s position in Churah.
