PM Modi to inaugurate Rs 500 crore bulk drug park in Nalagarh today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Tuesday virtually inaugurate the bulk drug park in in Himachal Pradesh’s industrial hub Nalagarh that has been set up at a cost of Rs 500 crore.

Union Health and Chemicals & Fertilizers Minister JP Nadda will also attend the inauguration ceremony of this facility, established to make India self-reliant in antibiotic raw materials. Setting up of this park will facilitate manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), which is raw material of pharma industry.

More than 65 per cent of it is imported from China. In a bid to reduce dependence on China, the Union Government was promoting setting up of large-scale bulk drug parks in the country.

The setting up of this park will reduce the manufacturing cost of pharma companies by 20 per cent and the manufacturers will require no marketing as they can sell the API in the state itself.

This state-of-the-art facility will manufacture potassium clavulanate, a key component in antibiotic production. The first-of-its-kind plant is capable of fulfilling 50 per cent of India’s demand for antibiotic raw materials.

“The plant addresses a critical need as the Covid-19 pandemic highlighted global shortages and disruptions in raw material supplies, affecting medicine availability in India and many other countries,” an official said.

The plant’s strategic establishment aligns with the central government’s commitment to reducing reliance on international suppliers, ensuring consistent access to essential raw materials. The Himachal government facilitated the project by providing land at a concessional rate, underscoring the state’s support for initiatives that strengthen India’s pharmaceutical manufacturing base.

In addition, PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for a new critical care block in Chamba’s Pandit Jawahar Nehru Medical College. This block, to be constructed in partnership with the National Health Mission (NHM) and the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), will feature a 50-bed unit aimed at enhancing critical care services in the region.

An investment of Rs 11 crore will be directed toward this project, with Rs 6.89 lakh already allocated to procure essential equipment for the upcoming facility.
