Process of preparing draft roll of voters list begins

Individuals completing 18 years as of July 31, 2021, can get their names added

Elections in tribal areas of Himachal Pradesh may be declared soon. The state Election Commission has already decided on a schedule to prepare the draft roll of the voters’ list for the elections.


Voters list

According to the election commission’s decision, youth who have completed 18 years of age as of July 31 will be eligible to add their names on the voters’ list.

Also, all those individuals who are eligible but have not registered to add their names on the voters’ list, will be able to do so.

Panchayat bypolls in general areas too

Apart from general elections in the panchayats of Lahaul and Spiti, by-elections in the general category areas of Himachal will also be held.

The same schedule will be used to prepare the voters list for these elections too.

Draft roll to be finalised by August 25

As per the orders issued by the Election Commission, the draft roll for the voters’ list should be published by August 9.

The draft will have to be placed in public places as well as the panchayat offices so that people can register their objections or suggestions.

The names of deceased people will be taken off the roll. Objections and suggestions will have to be presented to the revising authority by August 16 which will look into these till August 20.

The appellate authority will have time till August 23 to look into appeals and the draft roll of the voters’ list will have to be completed by August 25.

Polls in 16 panchayats in Kaja, 19 in Pangi and 28 in Lahaul

These panchayats are expected to go to the polls as soon as the voters’ list is complete, Preparations for the election to these panchayats began as soon as the new state Election Commissioner Anil Khachi took charge.

Representatives of these tribal panchayats completed five years of their terms on June 23.

The government had set up committees to operate these panchayats. Elections to these tribal areas had been delayed due to the outbreak of the second wave of Covid-19.
