Palampur’s Rajan Minhas quits engineering to launch aromatherapy startup

Natural products shine at Gandhi Craft Bazaar in Mandi

MANDI: A deep connection with nature led Palampur resident Rajan Minhas to give up his engineering career and embark on an entrepreneurial journey in aromatherapy.

Today, Minhas’s natural products, including aroma candles, perfumes, rose water and massage candles, are the centre of attention at the Gandhi Craft Bazaar in Mandi, organised by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.

His unique venture, which he started under the CM Startup Scheme in 2020, is gaining recognition for its sustainable approach and benefits for mental well-being.

Nature-inspired entrepreneurship

Minhas, who left his engineering job in south India in 2018, attributes his career shift to his love for nature. “I returned home to Palampur to explore business ideas that align with nature,” he shared. His hard work and dedication bore fruit when he collaborated with the Himachal Institute of Bio-Resource Technology (CSIR) to establish his startup, producing natural aromatherapy products using eco-friendly wax.

The products, including various scented candles, perfumes and massage essentials, not only refresh and rejuvenate users but also help in alleviating emotional and mental stress.

Empowering local women

Minhas’s startup isn’t just about business, but it’s also a social enterprise. His venture has provided livelihood opportunities for 10 women from the Shailja Self-Help Group. These women, who work from home, earn between Rs 6,000 and Rs 8,000 monthly by contributing to the production process.
“I wanted my business to benefit the local community, especially women,” said Minhas. “They play a crucial role in making these products and it’s fulfilling to see them empowered financially.”

Sustainability at its core

A strong advocate of sustainability, Minhas ensures that his products are made from 100% natural wax and that minimal plastic is used in packaging. “We are using waste pine needles and coconut shells for packaging candles,” he explained. “This not only adds a rustic charm to the products but also reduces environmental impact.”

The raw materials for his products are sourced locally from Himachal Pradesh as well as from other states, further enhancing the eco-friendly nature of his venture.

Aromatherapy’s rising popularity

Minhas’s natural aromatherapy products have quickly gained popularity for their ability to calm and rejuvenate. The display at the Gandhi Craft Bazaar in Mandi has attracted visitors from across the state, with many praising the quality and benefits of the products.

The success of Rajan Minhas’s startup stands as a testament to how passion for nature and sustainability can lead to both personal fulfillment and business success. With growing demand for his products, the future looks bright for this eco-conscious entrepreneur and his innovative venture.
