In a united display of outrage and solidarity, healthcare professionals from Vivekananda Medical Institute at Palampur, in collaboration with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and other healthcare institutions organised a protest rally on Saturday (August 17, 2024) in Palampur.

The rally was held in response to the alleged rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, an incident that has angered the medical community across the country.

The protest saw widespread participation from doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers in the Palampur region, all of whom condemned the horrific crime and demanded justice for the victim. The rally aimed to not only express collective grief and anger but also to highlight the urgent need for enhanced safety measures for healthcare workers.

During the rally, a memorandum was submitted to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Palampur, with a request to forward it to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Kangra. The memorandum called for the implementation of comprehensive safety measures, along with the establishment of a standardised rule, standard operating procedure or policy specifically designed to ensure the safety and protection of all healthcare workers.

Addressing the participants, Air Commodore (Dr) Vimal Dubey, Director of Vivekananda Medical Institute, expressed deep concern over the incident in Kolkata. He emphasised the vulnerability of healthcare workers who, despite being frontline warriors, often face threats and violence in their line of duty.

Dr Dubey urged the authorities to take immediate steps to prevent such atrocities from occurring in the future and to ensure a safe working environment for all medical professionals.

The Indian Medical Association Palampur echoed these sentiments, with representatives condemning the brutal crime and highlighting the need for nationwide reforms to protect healthcare workers. They thanked all participants for their support and unity in standing up against such heinous acts.
