Resentment among students of Agriculture University, Palampur, regarding the excessive fees being charged is refusing to die down.
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) university unit secretary Abhay Verma informed that at present students have to pay Rs 1.50 lakh to Rs 2 lakh annually as fees at the Agriculture University.
The ABVP unit has been urging the university administration and the Himachal government through memorandums to reduce the fees. However, the pleas have fallen on deaf ears, Verma said.
To wake up the administration and the government the students have been agitating for quite some time.
Among other steps, the students boycotted classes, took out a protest rally, and raised slogans against the university administration and the government.
Earlier, the unit president Ankit Thakur had taken strong exception to the university’s notice seeking names of students who took part in the protest rally. Thakur had warned the university administration that ABVP is not going to back out because of such pressure tactics. It goes to show how insensitive the university administration is to the cause of students, Thakur said adding that students are coming from farming families and cannot afford to pay such exorbitant fees.
Agrivision state convenor Rahul Sharma urged farming organisations to take note of the students’ plight and join their agitation.
