Overcoming paralysis, Mandi’s Hardeep Kaur turns rare example of self-reliance, earning lakhs via homemade pickles, cereals, handicrafts

MANDI: Hardeep Kaur, a resident of Chhatra village in Sundernagar subdivision of Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh, has unequivocally proven that with hard work, perseverance, commitment and positive thinking, one can overcome any challenge. Afflicted by paralysis at 20 years of age and dealing with her husband’s diabetes, she maintained her family’s unity with her unwavering “never say die” attitude.
Unable to complete her education due to early marriage, Hardeep Kaur ensured her children received higher education and became self-sufficient. Despite numerous hardships, she has emerged as a beacon of self-reliance without needing any introduction.
During her illness, Hardeep Kaur joined the literacy committee in Mandi and attended a NABARD-organised training camp, mastering the art of making pickles, cereals and handicrafts. Initially modest, her sales not only aided her recovery but significantly boosted her income as she travelled from village to village.
Hardeep Kaur’s journey expanded as she enrolled in the Agricultural Training Centre in Sundernagar, receiving free training in various skills. Acknowledging her dedication, the Agriculture Department selected her as a master trainer. She broadened her reach by participating in food festivals across different cities.
Amidst illness, she sold pickles, cereals and handicrafts from village to village. Despite challenges, she ensured higher education for her children and remained a pillar of support for her ailing husband. Currently, she earns an annual income of approximately two and a half to three lakh rupees.
Diversifying her product range to include momos, siddu, ragi laddoos and burfi, Hardeep Kaur mostly sells locally but occasionally collaborates with prominent shopkeepers, setting up stalls at intersections. She proudly mentioned that her products passed quality tests at the open millet showroom in Ghumarvin, allowing her to send these for sale.
Hardeep Kaur highlighted the state government’s initiatives during a conversation with TNR, emphasising welfare schemes and free training programs fostering self-reliance among Himachal residents. “The Mandi district administration actively supports various schemes, providing free training to empower women and make them self-reliant,” she added.
