SHIMLA: One person was killed while another is missing when an Innova vehicle carrying two Tamil Nadu tourists from Shimla to Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh fell into the raging waters of Sutlej river.

According to information, the driver of the Innova was killed in the accident. One tourist was injured while the other has been missing. The tourists were said to be on their way to explore the scenic Spiti area next to Kinnaur when the vehicle, bearing registration number HP01AA-1111, fell into the river near Pangi Nullah in Kinnaur on the National Highway-5.

The accident occurred on Sunday evening as the driver lost control over the vehicle and it fell into a 200-metre-deep gorge and then into the Sutlej. The deceased has been identified as Tenzin, a resident of Tabo in Lahaul-Spiti.

Gopinath, the injured tourist, miraculously escaped the confines of the car but not without sustaining grave injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention before being referred to the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla for further treatment.

Teams of the police and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) immediately swung into action and carried out a search operation to locate the missing tourist. The operation was closed on Sunday evening due to darkness and resumed at dawn on Monday.

Tenzin’s body was recovered from the waters of the Sutlej late Sunday evening. The search for the missing tourist, however, continues, said an official.
