On PM Modi’s birthday, plantation drive conducted at Nela along Mandi-Manali four-lane highway
MANDI: NHAI’s Project Director Varun Chari said that a plantation drive was conducted as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘One Sapling in Mother’s Name’ campaign, which aims to promote environmental conservation by encouraging people to plant saplings in honour of their mothers. As part of the initiative, around 5,000 saplings have already been planted by the highway authority during the monsoon season.
The event, held at Nela near Mandi, saw NHAI Project Director Varun Chari and other officials plant saplings at the entrance of two tunnels along the four-lane highway. Varun Chari personally planted a sapling in honor of his mother, symbolising the campaign’s message of respecting Mother Earth by nurturing green cover.

The Mandi event was part of a larger, nationwide plantation drive, with live broadcasts connecting programs across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address was also streamed live during the event.
Focus on environmental conservation
Speaking at the event, Varun Chari highlighted the importance of tree plantation, not just for road safety but for protecting the environment as well. He stressed that planting fruit-bearing and medicinal plants along highways is crucial for maintaining ecological balance.
Local residents welcomed the campaign, acknowledging the importance of both planting and preserving saplings. They noted that caring for the trees planted in the name of one’s mother aligns with the belief that Mother Earth is as revered as a deity, and safeguarding her green cover is a shared responsibility.
