Una | TNR
Una district now occupies a place of pride in the sporting arena, thanks to its very own prodigy, high jumper Nishad Kumar who did the country and the state of Himachal proud by winning a silver medal in the men’s high jump at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020.
Epitome of courage
Nishad’s life is the epitome of courage and confidence, and one that lessons can be drawn upon. Nishad lost an arm at the tender age of 8, while he was helping his family cut fodder for the cattle. Born to a poor farming household, he faced several financial constraints on his way to achieving glory. His handicap only made him stronger and it was during the period when he lost his arm that he decided to enter the world of sports. Though a far-fetched dream, Nishad’s parents decided to have a go at destiny and sent him to Panchkula paying just Rs 2500. It was here that Nishad’s destiny was written.
A supportive coach
Nishad’s coach not only trained him but helped him financially too. He also connected him to several people in the field. Though Nishad’s mother was always worried about her son’s handicap and wondered how he would get through in life, his hard work and dedication saw him through. So much so that today he and his family have overcome their financial woes and hopefully his life too will turn around following his achievement.
