National Theatre Festival showcases ‘Mandala’ by Delhi’s Silly Soul Foundation in Mandi

MANDI: The Himachal Cultural Research Forum and Repertory, located at Sathole village in Mandi, is hosting a four-day National Theatre Festival in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

On the third day of the festival, the Delhi-based Silly Soul Foundation captivated the audience with a mesmerising performance of Mandala, directed by acclaimed Priyanka Sharma.

The 75-minute play, directed by Sharma, left a lasting impression on the attendees with its emotional depth and dramatic intensity. Professor Anupama Singh, president of Rotary Club Mandi, graced the event as the chief guest for the evening.

Tale of complex relationships

Mandala delves into the complex emotional dynamics between its three main characters: Mamta, Mohini and Jeevan. The narrative follows the evolving relationship between Mamta, who rents out a spare room to Mohini, a young student, in exchange for light housework. As Mamta opens up about her past relationship with her former lover Jeevan, the story takes a dramatic turn when Jeevan returns and starts a romantic entanglement with Mohini.

Priyanka Sharma, Nikita and Rahul delivered powerful performances that left the audience spellbound.

Silly Soul Foundation’s journey

Founded a decade ago, the Silly Soul Foundation has become a cornerstone of Delhi’s theatre scene, organising various workshops, festivals and storytelling sessions. The group has staged several critically acclaimed plays, including Dhruvswamini, Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai, Astachal Ka Suraj, Khurdure Haath, Fakhta and Padosan. In addition to live performances, they have also ventured into audio productions, bringing to life classics such as Buniyaad, Bahurupiya and Dhruvswamini through innovative audio storytelling.

About Priyanka Sharma

Priyanka Sharma, the director of Mandala, is widely regarded as one of the most talented contemporary actors in Hindi theatre. With a career spanning over two decades, she has performed in over 100 plays and 500 shows. Sharma has gained recognition for her skillful command of the stage, her improvisational talent and her deep connection to the characters she portrays.

Her work has been recognised by India Today magazine, naming her one of the “100 Most Influential Youth” in the country. She is also the recipient of prestigious awards such as the Vagdhara Samman, Nari Shakti Samman and and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar.

Sharma is the founder of the Silly Soul Foundation, which hosts the annual garden theatre festival Tafreeh. The foundation is dedicated to theatre education and works with schools, colleges, government departments and private organisations to promote theatre arts. Recently, Sharma expanded her work into audio plays, directing adaptations of literary classics like Umrao Jaan, Jis Lahore Ni Vekhya, and Buniyaad.

The National Theatre Festival continues to showcase remarkable talent, bringing together performers and theatre enthusiasts from across the country.
