As Narendra Modi gears up for his third term as Prime Minister, all eyes are on the formation of his new cabinet, particularly in Himachal Pradesh where the BJP has once again secured all four Lok Sabha seats for the third consecutive time.
Speculations are rife within political circles that JP Nadda, currently serving as the national president of the BJP, might relinquish his position to assume a ministerial role in the Modi government 3.0. Nadda’s potential move opens up avenues for other prominent figures from Himachal Pradesh, notably Anurag Thakur, who secured victory for the fifth consecutive term in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
Anurag, having served as a minister in the previous government, stands as a strong contender for a ministerial berth once again.
Apart from Anurag, other names surfacing for ministerial roles include Suresh Kashyap, a three-time victor from the Shimla seat, and actress Kangana Ranaut, who clinched victory in the Mandi parliamentary seat against powerful Congress minister Vikramaditya Singh. Kashyap and Ranaut are speculated to be in contention for ministerial positions from the Scheduled Caste and women’s quota, respectively. However, their aspirations face challenges from within their own ranks, with Dr Sikander vying for the Scheduled Caste quota and Rajya Sabha member Indu Goswami contesting for the women’s quota.
Himachal Pradesh, often yielding only a single ministerial representation in the central government, is poised for a potential increase in its ministerial share, owing to its significant contribution to the BJP’s electoral victories. Modi’s affectionate regard for Himachal Pradesh, akin to his sentiment for Gujarat, further fuels expectations of a larger ministerial representation from the state.
However, amidst the anticipation, concerns loom regarding potential compromises and reallocations of ministerial berths due to the formation of a coalition government after a decade. With coalition dynamics at play, there’s apprehension that Himachal Pradesh might face a reduction in its ministerial share. The impending Assembly elections in Bihar and Haryana also add to the uncertainty as any reduction in ministerial representation from these states might affect smaller states like Himachal Pradesh adversely.
