Much-awaited Shimla paragliding championship takes off today, attractive cash prizes up for grabs

Shimla: The much-awaited ‘Flying Festival’ is set to begin on Wednesday in Junga, near Shimla, with Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla inaugurating the four-day paragliding championship.
The event, aimed at boosting tourism in the region, will see over 50 participants from various parts of India, including a female paraglider from West Bengal, competing in the ‘Spot Landing Paragliding Championship’.
The competition, which will feature both solo and team categories, is expected to attract domestic and international paragliders. Pilots have already started practising at the Tikkar site in Junga, known for its scenic views and paragliding-friendly terrain.

Two days into the festival, Indian wrestler Great Khali will join the festivities as the chief guest. Panchayati Raj Minister Anirudh Singh will also be present for the occasion, the event being scheduled for October 18.
This is the second time the ‘Flying Festival’ is being held in Junga. Last year’s event was also a major success, attracting a significant number of tourists. The event is organised by Shimla Glide Inn, and Managing Director Arun Rawat expressed excitement about the festival’s growth.
Rawat shared that the winning team in the paragliding competition will take home a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, while the solo class winner will receive Rs. 2.25 lakh. The event will conclude on October 19.
Paragliding enthusiasts have more to look forward in Himachal Pradesh as the Paragliding Pre-World Cup is set to take place in Narwana and Bir-Billing in November.
