DHARAMSHALA: The Madhya Pradesh High Court has issued a notice to film actress and BJP Member of Parliament from Mandi Kangana Ranaut in response to a petition filed against her recent controversial remark regarding India’s independence.
Ranaut had stated at a public event that “India did not achieve independence in 1947 through struggle but received it as alms,” sparking widespread criticism.
The petition, filed by advocate Amit Kumar Sahu, challenged Ranaut’s statement as highly objectionable and disrespectful to the countless individuals who sacrificed their lives for India’s freedom.
The court has now directed Ranaut to clarify her stance and explain why she made such a remark.
Kangana Ranaut stirred controversy with her remarks, claiming that “the freedom India gained in 1947 from the British was not earned through struggle but was given as alms.” She further elaborated, stating, “Lord Mountbatten left India after signing a treaty, and not due to a forceful struggle.” According to Ranaut, “India became truly independent in 2014,” implying that the country’s real freedom came much later.
Her comment, which downplayed the sacrifices made during India’s long and arduous fight for independence, has been deemed offensive by many, including Sahu, who promptly moved the court, saying, “It is disrespectful to those who fought and gave their lives for the nation’s freedom.”
The petition against Ranaut’s statement was heard by Justice Vishwashwari Mishra of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Following the hearing, a registered notice was issued to Kangana Ranaut, asking her to respond to the objectionable remarks she made about the country’s freedom struggle. The court emphasised that, as a public figure and role model for many, Ranaut should exercise caution when making such statements.

The notice has been sent to Ranaut’s residence in Himachal Pradesh and her response is awaited by both the court and the public.
Previous notice on ‘Emergency’ film
This is not the first time Kangana Ranaut has faced legal scrutiny. Earlier, the Madhya Pradesh High Court had issued a notice concerning her upcoming film Emergency, after objections were raised by the Sikh community, calling for a ban on its screening. The film, based on the political events of the 1975 Emergency in India, has also courted controversy.
