The monsoon’s arrival in Himachal Pradesh is expected to be delayed by three days this year, with its onset anticipated on June 27.

Typically, the monsoon reaches the state between June 22 and 25. However, this year, even pre-monsoon showers have been scant, affecting only the eastern regions of the state.

Surendra Paul, Director of the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, indicated that pre-monsoon rains might commence on June 24.

“Most of the high and medium-altitude areas of the state may receive light rain today while the plains will remain sunny,” he said.

Paul also forecasted clear weather for most parts of the state on June 25 and 26, leading to a slight increase in temperatures.

Monsoon rains are expected to cover most parts of Himachal Pradesh on June 27 and 28. A yellow alert has been issued for June 29 and 30, predicting heavy rains in many areas, including Shimla, Sirmaur, Mandi, Chamba, Kullu and Kangra.

This year’s monsoon is expected to bring good rains, which are crucial not only for Himachal Pradesh but also for neighbouring states like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan.

These regions rely on Himachal’s water resources for their agricultural needs. Good monsoon rains help recharge these water sources, vital for farming activities.

So far, Himachal Pradesh has experienced 57 per cent less rainfall than usual in June. Normally, the state receives 66.7 mm of rain in the first 24 days of June, but this year it has only received 28.6 mm.

Rainfall deficits have been significant in several areas: Hamirpur (-78%), Una and Kangra (-75%), Mandi (-71%), Bilaspur (-45%), Chamba (-55%), Kinnaur (-69%), Kullu (-51%), Lahaul-Spiti (-24%), Shimla (-55%), and Sirmaur (-66%). In contrast, Solan district has received 43 per cent more rainfall than normal.

Before the monsoon’s arrival, the state will experience hot weather for the next 72 hours, particularly in the lower areas of Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur and Solan districts.

Despite the recent rains in the mountains over the past three to four days, temperatures remain high, with Una recording 40.8 degrees Celsius, 3.5 degrees above normal.
