The residents of Kullu and Mandi districts in Himachal Pradesh experienced mild earthquake tremors on Tuesday, triggering panic but causing no reported damage.

The quake struck at around 12.02 pm, with many people rushing out of their homes in fear. This marks the second earthquake in Kullu within two days.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the epicentre of the earthquake was located at a depth of 3.3 km in Mandi district. The tremor registered a magnitude of 3.3 on the Richter scale. While the quake was felt by residents, its low intensity meant that no significant damage occurred.

The earthquakes are categorised based on their magnitude on the Richter scale. Quakes with magnitudes less than 2 fall in the micro category and usually go unnoticed, with around 8,000 such events occurring daily worldwide. Tremors measuring between 2.0 and 2.9 are classified as minor and happen 1,000 times a day, though they are typically not felt.

The earthquake that struck Kullu and Mandi was classified as “very light”, with magnitudes between 3 and 3.9. These earthquakes, which occur about 49,000 times annually worldwide, are often felt but rarely cause any damage.

For comparison, “light” category quakes, measuring 4.0 to 4.9, are more noticeable, shaking household items but usually causing no serious harm. This is the second tremor to shake Kullu within two days.
