A mild earthquake measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale was felt in Kullu area of Himachal Pradesh in the wee hours of Friday (June 14, 2024).
According to the National Centre for Seismology, the tremors were felt at 3.39 am. While the immediate impact of today’s earthquake appears to be minimal, it serves as a wake-up call for sustained efforts in earthquake preparedness and mitigation strategies, said an official.
Chamba, a serene town nestled in the picturesque hills of Himachal Pradesh, too was shaken by a 5.3 magnitude earthquake on April 4.
The tremors revived memories of the catastrophic Kangra earthquake that struck on April 4, 1905, claiming the lives of 20,000 people and leaving behind a trail of destruction. The recent seismic activity serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of regions like Himachal Pradesh to earthquakes.
Despite advancements in technology and disaster preparedness, the threat posed by natural disasters remains ever-present. It underscores the critical need for continuous efforts in enhancing resilience and readiness in seismic-prone areas, including robust infrastructure, early warning systems, and community awareness initiatives.
