Mandi: In a significant breakthrough, Mandi police have apprehended a suspect involved in the theft of ECMs (Engine Control Modules) from vehicles in Aut, Mandi, Dhanotu, and Sundernagar.
The accused, identified as Abhishek Gupta, 40, son of Puranlal, hails from Shahjahanpur in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. For the past 15 years, he has been residing with his family at House No. 232, Top Floor, Chand Nagar, near Kanhaiya Park, Tilak Nagar, Delhi.
On the night of January 28, 2024, Gupta was returning to Delhi from Manali, accompanied by an 18-year-old Nepali youth named Rohit, who aided him in the thefts. Rohit, a resident of the Khayala slums in Delhi, is currently incarcerated in Tihar Jail for another theft case.
That night, Gupta and his accomplice stole ECMs from ten vehicles, including two i-20s and two Vernas near Bhuli Chowk in Mandi, one i-20 in Dhanotu, three i-20s in Sundernagar, and one i-20 and one Verna in Aut. The next day, theft cases were registered at all relevant police stations.
The police utilized ITMS (Intelligent Traffic Management Systems) on the four-lane highway to track the vehicle used in the thefts. CCTV footage from Bhuli provided additional evidence, showing the suspects in the act. Despite these efforts, the culprits initially evaded capture.
Last week, acting on a vital lead, a team from Mandi police station, led by ASI Vinod Kumar, was dispatched to Delhi. The operation resulted in the successful apprehension of the main accused, Abhishek Gupta. He has been arrested and will be presented in court today to secure police remand for further investigation.
This arrest marks a significant achievement for Mandi police in their ongoing efforts to combat vehicle-related thefts and bring perpetrators to justice.
