Mandi MLA Anil Sharma slams critics opposing indoor stadium, says it’s crucial for development of youth
MANDI: BJP’s Mandi Sadar MLA Anil Sharma has issued a firm response to the opposition faced by the proposed indoor stadium in Paddal, asserting that the project is vital for the future of Mandi’s youth and the town’s overall development.
Sharma stressed that the indoor stadium is essential for providing world-class facilities to local athletes, a necessity in an era where youth are increasingly at risk of falling into drug abuse. “It’s imperative that we offer our young people constructive avenues like sports to steer them away from harmful activities,” he said.
The MLA addressed concerns regarding the construction of the stadium on Sports Department land, labeling the opposition as “illogical” and “unfounded.” He pointed out that Mandi’s citizens, especially the youth, stand to benefit significantly from the upgraded facilities.

Sharma also reassured the public about the ongoing Shivratri festival traditions, emphasising that the indoor stadium would not interfere with religious practices. “I have deep faith in our deities and want to assure everyone that proper arrangements will be made for them during the Shivratri festival. The indoor stadium will provide shelter and allow devotees to worship without any inconvenience,” he stated.
Highlighting the challenges faced in other proposed sports complexes in the region, Sharma mentioned that legal disputes and objections from the Forest Department have stalled projects in areas like Raghunath’s Padhar and near Ratti Bridge. He warned that if funds from the central government’s Khelo India scheme are not utilised within the year, they will lapse, potentially stalling Mandi’s sports development indefinitely.
Sharma did not mince words when addressing the critics of the project. “It’s unfortunate that those who have done nothing for Mandi’s growth are now trying to position themselves as protectors of the town’s interests by opposing this crucial development. If they genuinely care about Mandi’s future, they should propose an alternative site where such a stadium can be built without harming the environment,” he remarked.
He concluded by highlighting the importance of investing in the youth, who he described as the nation’s future. “This indoor stadium is not just a project —it’s a necessity. Providing the best facilities for our athletes will not only keep them away from negative influences but will also help them achieve excellence in sports, bringing pride to Mandi and to India as a whole,” Sharma said.
