Mandi artist Rajesh Kumar earns global acclaim with Ramayana-inspired ‘Pahari Miniature’ paintings in Nepal

MANDI: Rajesh Kumar, a master of the traditional “Pahari Miniature” paintings of Mandi art style, commonly known as “Mandi Kalam”, is making waves in the international art scene, with his Ramayana-inspired paintings earning high praise at a prestigious exhibition in Kathmandu, Nepal.

His works were among 27 selected Indian artworks displayed at the Swami Vivekananda Culture Centre, an event organised in collaboration with the Indian Embassy in Nepal and the Fine Art Academy of Nepal. The international exhibition featured a diverse range of artists from India, with Kumar’s contributions standing out as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district.

Global platform for Mandi art

Rajesh Kumar’s three intricately crafted Pahari Miniature paintings, based on the epic Ramayana, were selected for the exhibition, a rare honour shared only by one other artist from Himachal Pradesh — Sushil Kumar from Kangra. Held from September 23 to 30 at Sita Bhavan in Kathmandu, the exhibition not only brought international attention to Indian art but also elevated Mandi’s unique art style onto the global stage.

Mandi Kalam art style, known for its delicate lines, vivid colours and deep cultural significance, captivated audiences, earning high acclaim for its storytelling through visual art. According to Gargi Seth, co-founder and director of the Indian Art Circle, this exhibition will travel to four more countries before concluding in Delhi, further expanding the reach and recognition of the participating artists, including Rajesh Kumar.

Rajesh Kumar’s journey: Passion meets perseverance

For Rajesh Kumar, this recognition is not just personal but a victory for Mandi’s traditional art form, which he has championed throughout his career. Speaking about his experience, Rajesh expressed immense pride in being able to represent his homeland on such an esteemed international platform.

“To see my work alongside the creations of some of India’s most celebrated artists is both humbling and inspiring. This opportunity has not only bolstered my confidence but has also brought Mandi’s art into the global spotlight,” he said.

Rajesh’s artistic journey began in the scenic hills of Mandi where he first fell in love with the region’s rich cultural heritage. Over the years, he honed his skills, studying the ancient techniques passed down through generations and incorporating them into his own modern interpretations. His Ramayana-inspired paintings, for instance, blend traditional Mandi artistry with contemporary perspectives, making his work both timeless and relevant.

Torchbearer of Mandi art

Rajesh’s contributions to the world of art extend beyond his own work. Over the years, he has tirelessly promoted and preserved the Mandi style by training the next generation of artists through workshops and art camps. His efforts have helped breathe new life into a centuries-old art form, ensuring its survival in a rapidly changing world.

He firmly believes in the need to expand the reach of Mandi art, both within India and internationally, urging more significant support and recognition for this unique style. “Mandi art deserves to be celebrated for its beauty and history. We need to continue building awareness and appreciation for this art form, especially among the youth,” Rajesh remarked.

Looking for new opportunities

Rajesh Kumar’s journey is far from over. With the exhibition set to travel to four more countries, and eventually to Delhi, he sees this as a stepping stone to future collaborations and opportunities. His dedication to his craft and his region remains steadfast as he continues to explore new artistic horizons while staying true to the traditions of Mandi.

“This is just the beginning,” he said. “I feel incredibly fortunate, but there is still so much work to be done in promoting Mandi art on a larger scale. I am excited to continue this journey, to learn, grow, and create.”

Rising Star with deep roots

Rajesh Kumar’s success is a shining example of how local traditions can thrive on global platforms. His Ramayana-inspired works are not just paintings; they are cultural narratives that connect the past with the present. Through his efforts, Mandi art is finding its place in the international art world, and with each new exhibition, the name of Mandi is carried a little further, shining a light on its rich artistic heritage.

For Rajesh Kumar, art is not just a passion — it is a lifelong commitment to preserving, promoting and passing on the traditions of his ancestors to the world. And with each stroke of his brush, he brings that commitment to life, one painting at a time.
