milk rate hikes amul mother dairy verka

Within two days of the Lok Sabha elections getting over in India, most of the milk marketing companies have hiked milk rates by Rs 2 per litre, raising concerns among consumers who have already been battling high inflation.

In north India, Amul and Verka were the first to hike the milk prices by Rs 1 per half litre and Rs 2 per litre in all segments of its packed milk category on June 2. The new price was effective from June 3. Mother Dairy hiked the prices on June 3.

After the hike, Amul Gold and Amul Taaza’s prices will be Rs 2 more per litre, Amul Buffalo Milk by Rs 3 per litre and the rest by Rs 1 per litre.

“The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), marketer of milk and milk products under the brand name Amul, has increased the prices of fresh pouch milk by Rs 2 per litre effective from June 3, 2024, in all the markets across the country,” said the GCMMFL in a statement.

The hike of Rs 2 per litre translates to 3-4 per cent hike on MRP, which was much lower than average food inflation, it said. Amul said it had not hiked the milk price since February 2023. The company attributed the price hike has been done to cope up with the overall cost of operation and production of milk.
