Local Shimla traders face losses as outsiders set up stalls in guise of winter carnival on Ridge

SHIMLA: The iconic Ridge ground in Shimla, adorned in the name of the Shimla Winter Carnival, has become a centre of controversy as shops selling fast food and hosiery, rather than promoting local handicraft, have taken over the market space. The carnival’s departure from its emphasis on showcasing regional products has triggered opposition from the town’s shopkeepers.
Known for hosting special events and maintaining a sense of exclusivity, the Ridge ground is adorned with shops from the Church to Scandal Point, transforming the usually reserved space into a bustling marketplace. Below the Ridge ground lies a British-era tank, which fears the risk of damage due to excessive crowds. Nevertheless, the administration has set up the carnival stage directly above this historical ground.
Anil Gupta, president of the Lakkar Bazaar Shopkeepers Association, expressed his discontent, noting that while the market was previously organised in Padam Dev Complex, the carnival has expanded its footprint from Ridge to Scandal Point. He lamented the missed opportunity to showcase the state’s local products and handicraft, observing that the Ridge ground’s historic significance is being overshadowed by stalls selling gol gappas and chaat tikki. Gupta said as the stalls are primarily managed by outsiders, the establishment of this market has “severely impacted the business of local shopkeepers”.
Surendra Pal, association vice-president, emphasised the historical importance of the Ridge. He pointed out that statues of former PM late Indira Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi and other prominent leaders had been obscured by commercial stalls. Pal noted the adverse effects on local markets like Lakkar Bazaar, which now lie vacant due to the influx of tourists at the Ridge.
