Leadership Vacuum in Kangra: BJP and Congress Leaders Lose Regional Grip

Dharamshala: Kangra district, once the political powerhouse of Himachal Pradesh, is witnessing a noticeable decline in its influence as its political leadership falters. Leaders from both the BJP and Congress seem increasingly disconnected from the masses, with their influence confined to their constituencies rather than extending across the region.

In the BJP, Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur’s absence from Kangra has raised eyebrows. Thakur has not visited the region for a significant period, reportedly due to internal rifts within the party. Multiple factions within the BJP have emerged, causing friction and dissatisfaction. This factionalism is believed to be keeping Thakur away and has sparked concerns about the party’s unity in the region.

The ruling Congress faces similar challenges. Despite ongoing crises, no Congress leader has stepped up to defend Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu in recent crisis. Instead, it was former BJP minister and MLA Bikram Thakur who leveled corruption allegations against Congress, with no response from Sukhu’s own party. The silence from Congress representatives has left CM Sukhu politically isolated in Kangra, eroding confidence in the party’s strength.

RS Bali, Congress MLA of Nagrota Bagwan, has focused largely on his own constituency, with significant funds from the Asian Development Bank being funneled into local projects. However, Bali, like others, has remained silent on broader issues and failed to defend the Sukhu government.

A concerning trend has emerged among both BJP and Congress workers who, after earning the trust of party leaders, now bear the responsibility of connecting with the masses and promoting their leaders. Unfortunately, many of these workers lack their own grassroots base. Instead of marketing and highlighting their leaders, they are engaged in self-promotion, neglecting the core role of political outreach. This issue plagues both major parties, further undermining their effectiveness in Kangra.

The lack of leadership coordination has impacted bureaucracy as well. Top bureaucrats in the region have confined themselves to political alliances that secure their own interests, worsening governance and public service delivery in Kangra.
