Kathak king Birju Maharaj dies of heart attack at the age of 83

Padma Vibhushan awardee Kathak dance guru Pandit Birju Maharaj died of a heart attack at a hospital in Saket in Delhi on Monday. He was 83 years old. Pt Birju Maharaj’s grandson Swaransh Mishra wrote in a post on social media that his maternal grandfather had passed away.

“I have to inform with sadness that he breathed his last on January 17, 2022,” he said.
Born on February 4, 1938, in Hadiya, Uttar Pradesh, to a family of Kathak lovers, Birju Maharaj was only nine years old when his father Pandit Lachhan Maharaj passed away.

He performed Kathak dance in many programmes in and outside the country. His formal name was Mohan Lal Mishra, but his fame spread as Pandit Birju Maharaj. He was an artist of the Lucknow Kalika-Bindadin Gharana.

His uncles Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj were also proficient in Kathak dance. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has condoled the death.

Adityanath said Pandit Birju Maharaj had brought pride to the country and the state all over the world with his art and talent.

He was a pioneer dancer of the Lucknow Kalika-Bindadin gharana of classical Kathak dance. While wishing peace to the departed soul, the Chief Minister expressed condolences to the bereaved family members.
