As the nation celebrates Kargil Vijay Diwas, marking the 25th anniversary of India’s victory over Pakistan, Himachal Pradesh pays tribute to its 52 valiant soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the war.
These bravehearts set an example of indomitable courage and patriotism during the two-month-long conflict, which started on May 3, 1999, and concluded with India’s victory on July 26, 1999.
The Kargil War, fought in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir, saw 527 soldiers of the Indian armed forces being martyred during Operation Vijay. Among them were 52 soldiers from Himachal Pradesh, who were posthumously awarded various gallantry awards, including the highest honours.
Among these heroes, Captain Vikram Batra (posthumously) of Palampur and Rifleman Sanjay Kumar of Bilaspur were awarded the Param Vir Chakra, the highest military honour, for their exceptional bravery.
