Actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut, who is BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, has reiterated her previous statement, asserting that India attained Independence in 2014. Also, she expressed her desire for India to remain a Hindu nation.
Addressing a public gathering, the BJP candidate highlighted the historical struggles endured by our ancestors, enduring centuries of slavery under first the Mughals and then the British. While Independence from British rule was achieved in 1947, Kangana lamented that Congress’s governance prevented the declaration of India as a Hindu nation.
Kangana emphasised that true independence for Sanatan Dharam was realised in 2014 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed leadership, enabling the freedom to practise and express religious beliefs without fear, aligning with the vision of establishing India as a Hindu nation.
Taking aim at the Congress, Kangana questioned why India was not declared a Hindu nation at Independence and pledged to work towards this goal if elected. Kangana faces competition from Congress nominee Vikramaditya Singh, son of the late former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.
The voting on June 1 in Himachal Pradesh will not only determine Lok Sabha members from four seats but also fill six Assembly seats, the bypolls where have been necessitated following the disqualification of Congress MLAs who defied a party whip for voting during the budget session.
With the BJP eyeing to replicate its 2019 success, Mandi parliamentary constituency holds symbolic significance for the Congress, previously represented by Virbhadra and his wife Pratibha Singh, who secured the seat in the 2021 byelection following the demise of then BJP MP Ramswaroop Sharma.
