Kangana Ranaut sparks controversy again, blames Punjab for drug menace in Himachal

MANDI: BJP MP from Mandi and actor Kangana Ranaut has once again stirred a storm with her remarks, this time linking Punjab to the drug crisis in Himachal Pradesh.
Speaking at a Gandhi Jayanti event in Sulpur Jaboth panchayat under Sarkaghat Assembly constituency, she alleged ‘chitta’ (heroin) that was flowing into Himachal originates from Punjab and is wreaking havoc on the hill state’s youth.
Without explicitly naming Punjab, Kangana referred to the “neighbouring state,” accusing it of being responsible for the spread of drugs in Himachal. Her comments have drawn sharp reactions, as she criticised not just the drug trafficking but also the behaviour of individuals from Punjab.
Aggression, drug abuse part of Punjab’s culture
Kangana Ranaut went on to make a strong statement, asserting that the sale of drugs and aggressive behaviour are ingrained in the culture of Punjab. She claimed, “This is the nature of people from Punjab – they bring drugs and aggression with them.
According to her, individuals from Punjab ride into Himachal Pradesh on motorcycles, engage in reckless behaviour and disrupt the peaceful environment of the region after consuming drugs and alcohol.
Safety concerns in neighbouring states
In a contrasting observation, Kangana praised the safety of women in Himachal Pradesh. She remarked that while women in other states were not safe, in Himachal, if a girl asks for a ride home late at night, she is safely dropped at her doorstep. She drew this comparison to emphasise the relatively secure environment in her home state.
Kangana’s statements have triggered fresh debate and sparked outrage, especially given the sensitive nature of the issue. Critics argue that her broad generalisations about Punjab could lead to further tensions, while supporters claim she is simply raising a valid concern about drug trafficking affecting Himachal Pradesh.
