In a move that has sparked further controversy, Kangana Ranaut, the Bollywood star-turned-politician and first-time BJP MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, has refused to back down from her contentious stance on the farmers’ protests.
Despite being reprimanded by BJP president JP Nadda in a closed-door meeting on Thursday (August 30, 2024), Kangana took to social media hours later to reinforce her earlier remarks, igniting fresh debate within the party ranks.
How the controversy started
The controversy began a few days ago when Kangana made objectionable comments about the farmers’ protests, which many within her party found troubling given the upcoming state elections, particularly in Haryana. The BJP swiftly distanced itself from her remarks. In a rare public admonition, the party issued a letter dissociating from the MP’s comments and urging her to refrain from speaking on sensitive policy matters.

Rebuked before Haryana poll meeting
Nadda, who met Kangana just before a crucial Haryana BJP core committee meeting at his Delhi residence, is said to have reiterated the importance of party discipline. He reminded her of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s repeated advisories to party members about the dangers of unnecessary public statements.
The timing of this discussion was critical, as the BJP was in the final stages of candidate selection for the upcoming Haryana elections, a process overseen by the central leadership, including Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
Kangana reposts ‘Proud Sanatani’s’ post
However, Kangana appeared undeterred. Hours after her meeting with Nadda, she reposted a tweet from one Nilesh Waghela, who questioned whether her statements about the farmers’ protests were incorrect, attaching news clippings from the time of the agitation. This act of defiance is likely to further strain her relationship with the party leadership, who have been trying to manage the fallout from her controversial statements.

Nilesh Waghela, who identified himself as “Proud Sanatani” on X, posted the following text along with a few old clippings from newspapers:
• Was @KanganaTeam wrong?
• Gang rape at Tikri border during farmers movement
• Child lost his father because he was killed and hanged during farmers’ protest
• Women sitting on farmers agitation were wishing PM death
Attempt to publicise new film?
Kangana’s actions come at a time when she is also heavily promoting her upcoming film “Emergency”, in which she portrays the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The film’s promotion, combined with her political statements, has kept her in the spotlight, albeit in ways that are increasingly challenging for her party to manage.
A political analyst said Kangana could even be aiming to gain publicity through her actions to promote her new film.
