Kalka-Shimla heritage track to take another 20 days to open till Himachal capital; railways suffering huge losses

SHIMLA: Closed for almost two months, the Kalka-Shimla world heritage railway track is likely to take about 20 days for restoration. In the first phase, the Northern Railway has started operating the toy train between Kalka and Koti in Solan. In the second phase, trains will run on the Kalka-Solan section from September 16. In the third phase, direct train service will start from Kalka to Shimla on September 30.

The work of repairing the Kalka-Shimla section, which was damaged due to heavy rain, is being done on war-footing. The Divisional Railway Manager is also continuously monitoring the section so that the track is repaired as soon as possible and the local residents and tourists can avail of the facility.The Indian Railways has suffered huge losses due to the damage to the Kalka-Shimla section. The entire section is being rebuilt and approximately Rs 5 crore will be spent.

Due to non-operation of trains, a revenue loss of about Rs 1.5 to Rs 2 crore has been incurred. According to information, the railway track, which gets disrupted frequently due to rains, will now be strengthened in such a way that even after landslides, there is no damage to the line and the operation of toy trains continues smoothly.Mandeep Singh Bhatia, Divisional Railway Manager, Ambala Division, said a train had started running between Kalka and Koti. “In the second phase, the operation of toy train will be started from Kalka to Solan from September 16.
