Former Congress Union minister addresses the media in Dharamshala

DHARAMSHALA: On the last day of the election campaign, Congress’ Kangra Lok Sabha candidate Anand Sharma addressed a press conference here on Thursday (May 30, 2024), expressing his gratitude to the people of Kangra and Chamba and urging them to vote in his favour on June 1.

Sharma criticised the BJP, urging them to “fight with truth sometimes”. Highlighting the importance of informed voting, Sharma asked young voters to consider the country’s unemployment rate before casting their votes. He emphasised the Congress’ commitment to fulfilling key promises in Himachal Pradesh, such as implementing the old pension scheme (OPS) for employees and providing Rs 1,500 monthly to women, initiatives the BJP allegedly tried to obstruct. He assured that these funds would be distributed to the women of the state after the elections.

Sharma further pledged to fill the 30 lakh vacant central government jobs immediately if the Congress comes to power. He accused the BJP of running a misleading campaign and avoiding discussions on critical issues like unemployment and inflation. He also criticised the central government for the demonetisation policy, claiming it caused significant hardships and led to the closure of many small businesses.

Additionally, Sharma condemned the central government for not declaring recent disasters in Himachal as a national calamity and accused them of discriminating against the state. He praised the state’s Congress leaders for standing by the people during tough times, despite the central government’s lack of support. He confidently stated that the Himachal government would become stronger after the by-elections.

Outlining his priorities, Sharma promised to enhance employment opportunities and boost tourism. He committed to making Kangra airport and Pathankot airport fully operational. In Chamba, he detailed plans to improve four main routes to promote tourism, connecting Kishtwar, Pangi, Lahaul and Baijnath.
