DHARAMSHALA: Sepoy Arvind Singh, a 27-year-old soldier from Lahad village in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh, was martyred in an encounter with terrorists at Chatru, 45 km from Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir.

Arvind, a soldier of the White Knight Corps, laid down his life in the line of duty during the gunfight that also claimed the life of Naib Subedar Vipin Kumar. Two other soldiers were critically injured and have been airlifted to the Command Hospital in Udhampur for treatment.

As the tragic news of Arvind’s martyrdom reached his ancestral village, a pall of grief descended on the area. His mother, unable to bear the shock, fell unconscious while his wife remains inconsolable, struggling to come to terms with the loss. Arvind leaves behind a 15-month-old son.

Glooms descends on village

In Lahad village, mourning has engulfed not just the martyr’s home but the entire community. The family’s house stands in stoic silence, with no activity in the kitchen since the news arrived. Neighbours and people from nearby villages have gathered to offer their condolences and support, but the grief is overwhelming.

Arvind’s younger brother, who is also serving in the Army, rushed home as soon as he heard the news. The family has a long history of service to the nation — Arvind’s grandfather also served in the Army, making the family a beacon of patriotism and sacrifice.

Arvind’s father Rajindra Singh said, “I got a call from an Army officer and they informed me that the body of my son is expected to arrive by evening. We are preparing for his final rites with heavy hearts.”
